Som Castle

Som Castle

Discover Som Castle

The Castle of Som is a fascinating place located on a hill 251 meters above sea level on the left bank of the Ebre River, southwest of Benifallet. This medieval castle has a rich and varied history dating back to 1158, when it was first mentioned in a donation to Tortosa Cathedral. The Castle of Som was a strategic point during the Middle Ages, serving as a fortress and a place of vigilance. In Pere de Rajadell's will of 1163, the castle is mentioned as "Castello Summum". Despite the passage of centuries and the transformations of the land, you can still see the foundations of a tower with a circular plan, which remind us of the greatness of this historic place. During the Civil War, this hill was used as a magnificent observatory by the Autonomous Group of the Ebro, later the Army of the Ebro, from April 1938 to January 1939. The summit was also used as deployment limit point between the different military units located on the front line of defense of the Ebro front on its left bank. Although the remains visible today are mainly limited to the base of a tower, the location of the castle offers spectacular views of the Ebro River and the surrounding lands. The hill has been organized into cultivated terraces since the 1950s, adding a rural charm to the visiting experience. Som Castle is not only a testament to the region's medieval past, but also an integral part of Benifallet's historical heritage. Its strategic location and eventful history make this place a must-see for history buffs and archeology enthusiasts.

Currently situation

Currently this fortification remains in ruins and only ordinary plastered masonry walls remain standing, with some ashlars at the bases (more reinforced) and corners. It is located on private property to which access is not allowed, so it will be a heritage asset that, once again, will end up in oblivion by the people of the territory.
