\n History of the castle <\/h1>\n <\/span>\n

Benifallet Castle, located in a strategic position, has witnessed several historical periods. It is believed that its first constructions date back to the Islamic era, although the remains visible today could correspond to later modifications and reuses of the original structure. \n\nDuring the Middle Ages, the castle played an important role in the defense of the territory. Its elevated location allowed it to control access to the town and offer a panoramic view of the Ebro River valley, a crucial point for the defense and control of the region. \n\nThe castle structures, yet to be fully excavated and studied, promise to reveal more details about life in the fortress and its functions over the centuries. Although time and human activities have erased many of its features, the remains found so far offer a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era. \n\nThe Benifallet Castle archaeological site is a living witness to the rich history of the area, awaiting future research to reveal all its secrets and contribute to the knowledge of our past. \n Currently Situation <\/h1>\n <\/span>\n

This site, still without a confirmed archaeological intervention, is located on the highest hill in the southeast of the urban center of Benifallet. This hill, since the 1950s, has been used for cultivation terraces, which has caused significant earth movements. \n\nIn August 2023, the Castles Working Group organized a visit to examine the location and condition of the previously unknown castle remains. During the visit, several elements were identified that could correspond to the castle. These elements are integrated in buildings that would take advantage of the old foundations. Some of these buildings are in a state of disrepair and abandonment, with trash and demolition debris inside. \n\nThe roof has fallen and the pavement of the upper floor is only partially preserved in some parts, although half collapsed. Other buildings, in a better state of conservation, seem to be used as a pantry or warehouse. The foundations of these buildings suggest that they could have reused elements of a more complex and larger construction. The corner of some of these buildings is formed by straight, well-profiled ashlars, which sit directly on the bedrock, using a lime mortar with ceramic fragments from various periods. Along these corners, you can see the tearing of a door jamb with remains of the iron hinges. In the direction of the river, there is a set of well-aligned ash trees that could form part of the town's defensive system. \n<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
